What Is a Kona Remote?

The Kona Remote is a Class 1 pedal-assist hardtail mountain bike with 140 millimeters of front suspension. Based on Kona’s respected progressive hardtail Honzo frame, the Remote has a slack head angle of 66 degrees and a 76.1-degree seat tube. Kona streamlined the Remote frame to accommodate a 504Wh internal battery, which powers the bike’s Shimano E7000 motor, providing assistance up to 20 mph. A simple controller allows the rider to easily toggle between three assist modes—Eco, Trail, and Boost. A Walk mode is also available. The bar-mounted display is easy to read and shows necessary info like assist mode, battery life, and speed.

Built on a butted 7005 aluminum frame, the Remote rolls on 29-inch wheels and is spec’d with a beefy 2.6-inch-wide Maxxis Minion DHF tire up front and a 2.4-inch Maxxis Minion DHR rear tire, mounted on WTB ST i35 TCS 2.0 29-inch rims laced to Boost-spaced Shimano front and rear hubs.

The Remote is built with a 10-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain, with a 10-46T cassette and Shimano E8000 cranks. Shimano MT410 hydraulic disc brakes with 203-millimeter front and 180-mil rear rotors provide plenty of stopping power. A coil-sprung Suntour Zeron 35 fork with 140 millimeters of travel absorbs bumps out front, and an internally routed TranzX dropper post dips you down 175 millimeters. The cockpit is spec’d with Kona-branded bars, stem, and grips, and a WTB Volt saddle.

How Does the Kona Remote Ride?

It’s been said that ebikes are great equalizers, but until I threw a leg over the Kona Remote, I hadn’t experienced this firsthand. This bike allowed me to do 25-mile-plus rides with thousands of feet of climbing in our local Santa Ana Mountains in about half the time it would take on an analog bike, and to finish still feeling human and able to function the rest of the day.

But the best part of riding the Remote was that it also let me ride with my über-fit partner with an unprecedented reversal of roles: I was now the first one up the hill, and for a change, he was chasing me. Atop the Kona Remote, I was, essentially, able to motor pace a veteran endurance racer who has for years kicked my ass up every climb. This alone was enough to warrant a rave review. But the fact that this hardtail eMTB was shreddier than expected, and delivered a fun ride all around, sealed the deal.
